A new conveyor, compressor, packaging machine, or other piece of warehouse equipment can improve an operation—once the building is ready to run it. Ordering the machine before confirming its electrical needs can leave a facility with equipment in place and installation details still unresolved.
This guide focuses on planning a new equipment connection. For Jacksonville facility managers, the useful starting point is a clear conversation among the equipment supplier, electrical contractor, and the people who operate the building.
Get the installation documents, not just the sales quote
The supplier’s quote may describe output, footprint, and delivery timing without supplying everything needed for an electrical estimate.
Request the exact model, manufacturer’s installation instructions, and electrical specifications. The electrician may need information about voltage, phase, electrical load, connection method, and any separate controls or accessory equipment. Have the supplier identify what comes with the machine and what the site must provide.
Do not treat two machines with a similar description as electrically interchangeable. Even a model offered with different power configurations should be specified clearly before purchase.
Confirm the building can support the proposed load
An available breaker space is not the same as available electrical capacity. Your contractor needs to evaluate the relevant supply and distribution equipment against the proposed installation.
The review may include the source panel, existing connected loads, circuit route, and compatibility with the equipment specifications. If the machine’s requirements do not match the available supply, resolve that with the supplier and electrician before arranging final delivery.
Ask for a clear finding: can the equipment be installed as planned, is additional electrical work needed, or does a missing specification need to be resolved first? Those are different outcomes with different implications for cost and timing.
Put the machine on a real floor plan
A rough location near a wall is not enough when racks, loading paths, doors, and maintenance access all compete for space.
Mark the intended equipment position and the areas that must remain accessible. Show existing panels, normal forklift routes, loading activity, and any planned changes to racking. Have the installation team determine a suitable wiring route and protection for the environment.

Define the shutdown before choosing an installation date
If work requires an outage, the affected operation needs more detail than “power will be off for a while.” Identify the systems that may be affected, the approved work window, and who can authorize a shutdown or restart.
Include the staff responsible for security, communications, refrigeration, or other systems that share the affected area where relevant. Qualified personnel should establish the electrical isolation and safe-work plan; this is not a task for warehouse staff to improvise.
A useful project plan also names a decision-maker for unexpected conditions. Discovering an access problem or an undocumented connection during the shutdown should trigger a clear decision, not conflicting instructions from several departments.
Separate electrical installation from machine commissioning
Connecting power and proving that a machine performs its intended production task are related but distinct responsibilities. Confirm whether the supplier needs to attend startup and who handles controls, calibration, operator training, or manufacturer-specific checks.
Before installation, agree on what the electrician will test and document, what the supplier will commission, and what the facility will accept. Record any remaining work before releasing the equipment for normal use.
This is also the time to confirm who provides labels, updated circuit information, and closeout documentation. Those details make future service easier.

- What supply or capacity assumptions still need verification?
- Who supplies the disconnect, cord, controls, and other connection components where required?
- What shutdown, access, and inspection coordination is included?
