EV charger estimate preparation checklist
The fastest useful EV-charger estimate starts with the vehicle, charger, electrical system, parking location, and route—not a guess based on charger amperage alone. Use this checklist before a Jacksonville site visit.
Do not remove an electrical panel cover, open equipment, or measure energized parts for an estimate. Exterior photographs and clear access are enough for initial planning.
Identify the charging requirement
- Record the vehicle year, make, model, onboard charging limit, connector type, and typical daily mileage
- Choose the charger model or collect the manufacturer installation manual before equipment is purchased
- Decide whether overnight Level 1 charging already meets the driving need or Level 2 is required
- List a second EV, generator, pool, hot tub, remodel, HVAC, or other major load planned for the next several years
Document the electrical system safely
- Photograph the closed electrical panel, its exterior label, the area around it, and any existing subpanel—never remove the cover
- Record the main breaker rating and visible open spaces without assuming either proves capacity
- Note electric water heating, ranges, dryers, HVAC systems, pool equipment, and other major electrical loads
- Share prior panel, service, solar, battery, or generator documentation when available
Plan parking and the wiring route
- Mark the normal parking position and the vehicle charging-port location
- Choose an indoor or outdoor mounting area that avoids cord trip hazards and vehicle impact
- Photograph the likely route between the panel and charger, including finished walls, attic access, pavers, driveway, landscaping, and gates
- Confirm Wi-Fi or cellular signal if the charger uses connected scheduling or reporting
- Tell the electrician about association rules, managed parking, landlord approvals, or shared electrical equipment
Compare complete options
- Ask for a load calculation when panel or service capacity is uncertain
- Compare hardwired charging, listed receptacle options, and load-management equipment based on the actual installation
- Confirm permit, inspection, surge protection, equipment mounting, labeling, startup, and warranty scope
- Avoid selecting charging amperage solely because a charger advertises a higher maximum rate
