Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are easy to overlook until one chirps at night, triggers repeatedly, or fails a test. Yet replacing hardwired alarms is more than changing a battery. The project may involve alarm age, placement, compatible interconnection, backup power, damaged wiring, accessibility needs, and the differences between smoke, carbon monoxide, and combination devices.

Jacksonville homes range from older properties with a few independent alarms to newer homes with interconnected hardwired equipment. Before buying replacements, inventory the complete system and decide what the household needs every alarm to do.

Start with the manufacture date

An alarm can look clean and still be at the end of its service life. Check the label for the manufacture date and model number. The [U.S. Fire Administration](https://www.usfa.fema.gov/prevention/home-fires/prepare-for-fire/smoke-alarms/index.html) advises replacing smoke alarms when they are 10 years old and testing them monthly. Follow the manufacturer instructions for each specific device because carbon monoxide sensors and combination alarms may have different end-of-life periods.

Create a room-by-room list rather than replacing only the alarm that started chirping. Alarms installed together are often the same age. Record whether each device is battery-only, hardwired with battery backup, wirelessly interconnected, or connected to a monitored fire-alarm or security system.

Placement and alarm type are separate decisions

Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms detect different hazards. A combination unit can provide both functions, but the correct locations still depend on the home, sleeping areas, equipment, manufacturer directions, and applicable requirements.

USFA recommends smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home. The [Consumer Product Safety Commission](https://www.cpsc.gov/Safety-Education/Safety-Education-Centers/Carbon-Monoxide-Information-Center/CO-Alarms) recommends carbon monoxide alarms on each level and outside sleeping areas. A qualified installer can help apply current local requirements to an existing home, addition, rental property, or remodel.

Do not move an alarm simply because cooking or shower steam causes nuisance activation. The better solution may involve alarm type, location, ventilation, cleaning, or a hush feature. Disabling or removing a life-safety alarm leaves the household unprotected.

Hardwired alarms need compatible connections

Many hardwired residential alarms use an interconnect conductor so that when one alarm activates, the connected alarms sound. Replacement equipment needs to be compatible with the existing system and installed according to its listing and instructions. Similar-looking plugs do not prove two models or brands can communicate safely.

An electrician should investigate alarms with no power, damaged conductors, scorched connectors, unreliable interconnection, repeated circuit trouble, or missing hardwired locations. Adapters may be available for some listed replacement combinations, but they should not be treated as a universal shortcut.

If an alarm belongs to a monitored system, contact the alarm provider before changing it. A residential smoke alarm and a system detector may look alike while requiring completely different service procedures.

Plan for everyone who needs the warning

An alarm only helps if occupants can perceive it and respond. Consider closed bedroom doors, background noise, children, older adults, and people who are deaf or hard of hearing. Visual strobes, tactile notification devices, low-frequency sounders, or voice alerts may be appropriate depending on the occupant and system.

Interconnection improves notification because an alarm near the source can activate alarms elsewhere in the home. Test the completed system from sleeping areas, not just while standing beneath the device.

Know what chirps and full alarms mean

A periodic chirp may indicate a low battery, end of service life, loss of AC power, a fault, or another manufacturer-specific condition. Read the device instructions and identify which unit is signaling. Do not remove batteries from other alarms while searching for the source.

A full smoke or carbon monoxide alarm is different. Leave the building, stay outside, and call emergency services. Carbon monoxide cannot be identified by smell or sight. Headache, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, confusion, or other symptoms can require urgent medical attention. Never re-enter to investigate an alarm yourself.

Finish with testing and records

After installation, test each device using the manufacturer-directed procedure. Confirm interconnected alarms activate together where interconnection is provided. Record the model, location, manufacture date, installation date, and battery instructions. Schedule monthly button tests and keep the household escape plan current.
