Smoke and carbon monoxide alarm replacement checklist
Inventory alarm age, power, placement, interconnection, and household needs before replacing life-safety alarms.
If an alarm sounds, treat it as real: leave the building, stay outside, and call emergency services. Never disable an alarm to silence an unexplained warning.
Inventory every alarm
- List each smoke, carbon monoxide, or combination alarm by room and level
- Photograph the label and manufacture date without disconnecting hardwired equipment
- Record whether each alarm is battery-only, hardwired with battery backup, or part of a monitored system
- Note missing alarms, damaged units, painted covers, chirping, nuisance alarms, or alarms that do not respond to the test button
- Identify sleeping areas, fuel-burning appliances, an attached garage, and household members who need visual or tactile alerts
Plan compatible replacements
- Confirm the required alarm type and location with the current manufacturer instructions and applicable local requirements
- Use compatible listed equipment when existing alarms are interconnected; do not assume different brands or generations communicate correctly
- Decide whether combination smoke/CO alarms, sealed batteries, voice alerts, or accessibility devices fit the household
- Ask an electrician to evaluate missing power, damaged wiring, unsupported interconnection, or alarms on an unreliable circuit
- Keep model numbers and manuals so future replacements can be matched correctly
Test and document the finished system
- Use each alarm's test button and confirm interconnected alarms sound together where interconnection is provided
- Make sure occupants can hear or perceive the alarm from sleeping rooms with doors closed
- Write the installation and replacement date on the household safety record
- Schedule monthly button tests and follow the manufacturer instructions for batteries, cleaning, and end-of-life signals
- Review the household escape plan and keep alarms enabled after cooking or steam-related nuisance events
