An outdoor outlet that stops working after a Jacksonville downpour is often doing exactly what a safety device was designed to do: interrupting power when moisture or leakage current is detected. But repeated trips, a wet enclosure, corrosion, heat damage, or an outlet that will not reset can also reveal a defect that needs professional attention.
Northeast Florida combines wind-driven rain, humidity, salt air, irrigation, insects, and intense sun. Outdoor electrical equipment has to withstand all of it. Understanding the likely causes can help you respond safely without bypassing the protection that may be preventing shock.
Start with the GFCI protection
Outdoor receptacles generally require ground-fault circuit-interrupter protection. A GFCI monitors current leaving and returning on the circuit. When it detects a small imbalance that could indicate current flowing through an unintended path, it shuts power off quickly.
The tripped device may not be the outlet you are looking at. One GFCI receptacle can protect additional outlets downstream, and some outdoor circuits are protected by a GFCI breaker in the electrical panel. Garages, bathrooms, kitchens, and exterior receptacles may be connected in ways that are not obvious from their locations.
Common reasons rain causes a trip
Water may enter through a cracked cover, missing gasket, loose box, damaged conduit, deteriorated seal, or an extension-cord connection left outdoors. Condensation can collect inside an enclosure even when direct rain is not visible. Corrosion, insect debris, damaged wiring, landscape equipment, pool equipment, holiday lighting, and failing appliances can also create leakage current.
An outlet marked weather resistant is not enough by itself. The complete installation—including the box, gasket, cover, device, fittings, mounting, and cord arrangement—must suit the location and remain in good condition.
What you can check safely
Unplug portable equipment from affected outlets only if you can do so without touching wet or damaged components. From a dry location, look for a tripped GFCI receptacle or breaker. Check whether other outdoor, garage, bathroom, or kitchen outlets lost power at the same time.
Note what was connected when the trip occurred and whether irrigation, pressure washing, pool use, or a storm had just occurred. Photograph closed covers and visible damage without removing devices or opening enclosures.
Do not reset a GFCI while standing in water, touch damaged equipment, or keep resetting a device that immediately trips. Never replace a GFCI with a standard receptacle to stop nuisance trips.
When an outlet will not reset
A GFCI may refuse to reset because power is not reaching it, the circuit is still detecting a fault, the device has failed, or it is wired incorrectly. Some newer devices lock out after an internal self-test failure.
Waiting for the enclosure to dry may make an intermittent symptom disappear, but it does not repair a failed seal, corroded connection, or damaged cable. If the problem returns with the next rain, the source still needs to be found.
Warning signs that need prompt service
Arrange professional help promptly for burning odor, smoke, sizzling, buzzing, arcing, melted plastic, scorch marks, corrosion, cracked devices, repeated trips with nothing connected, shock or tingling, or a breaker that will not remain on. Pool, spa, dock, boat-lift, and irrigation faults deserve particular caution because people and water are nearby.
Call 911 for fire. Keep people away from damaged utility conductors and electrical equipment in standing water.
