Whole-house surge protection readiness checklist
Gather the panel, equipment, connection, and service-history details that help an electrician plan useful layered surge protection.
Never remove a panel cover or touch wet, damaged, buzzing, hot, or burned electrical equipment. Surge protection does not make damaged equipment safe.
Document the electrical service
- Photograph the panel label, breaker layout, service equipment, and any existing surge device without removing electrical covers
- Record the panel manufacturer, main rating, approximate age, and whether the service equipment is indoors or outdoors
- Note corrosion, water stains, rust, heat marks, buzzing, unusual odor, loose covers, or previous panel repairs
- Locate the grounding and bonding information available in prior electrical records or inspection reports
- Share planned panel, generator, solar, battery, EV charger, HVAC, pool, or renovation work
List equipment and every incoming path
- List HVAC, appliances, pumps, vehicle chargers, smart-home equipment, security, gates, lighting controls, and other hardwired electronics
- Identify computers, televisions, audio equipment, internet hardware, medical equipment, and other sensitive plug-in devices
- Note cable, telephone, antenna, satellite, camera, gate, data, and exterior-control connections that may provide another surge path
- Record previous surge damage, recurring equipment failures, unexplained resets, and outage-restoration problems
- Check point-of-use protectors for an active protection indicator and save their model and replacement guidance
Plan installation and ongoing checks
- Ask the electrician to confirm device compatibility, listing, rating, location, conductor routing, and panel condition
- Discuss layered point-of-use protection for valuable or multi-connected electronics
- Keep the installed model, date, warranty, indicator instructions, and replacement guidance with the home records
- Recheck the protection indicator after major storms, electrical service, and according to manufacturer instructions
- Treat burning odor, heat, buzzing, repeated trips, water intrusion, or damaged service equipment as a separate diagnostic issue
