Server room electrical readiness checklist
Map circuits, backup power, cooling, surge protection, monitoring, and response before a power event interrupts the business.
Two receptacles on the same circuit are not redundant power. Verify the actual source of every critical connection.
Map critical equipment and power
- List servers, switches, routers, firewalls, storage, phones, access control, cameras, cooling, and sensors
- Record equipment ratings, redundant power supplies, receptacles, circuits, panels, and breakers
- Identify circuits shared with copiers, kitchen equipment, cleaning receptacles, heaters, or unrelated rooms
- Define what must stay online during brief interruptions, longer outages, maintenance, and equipment failures
- Document future rack, network, phone, security, and storage expansion
Coordinate resilience and cooling
- Record UPS capacity, runtime, bypass, alarms, battery dates, maintenance, and supported equipment
- Confirm generator-backed circuits, transfer behavior, cooling availability, fuel planning, and test responsibility
- Determine whether redundant power supplies actually use independent sources
- Set temperature and power alarms, recipients, escalation times, and authorized shutdown contacts
- Protect technology from leaks, condensation, blocked airflow, temporary fans, and extension cords
Label, protect, and maintain
- Label panels, breakers, receptacles, UPS outputs, equipment power supplies, and generator-backed circuits consistently
- Review surge protection, grounding and bonding, cable pathways, panel access, and working clearances
- Keep racks, boxes, and storage from blocking electrical equipment or cooling airflow
- Track breaker trips, UPS alarms, temperature events, outages, battery replacements, and repairs
- Schedule coordinated maintenance windows and verify every system after restoration
