Retail store electrical opening checklist
A polished sales floor depends on electrical work customers never notice. Use this checklist to coordinate loads, lighting, signs, POS, permits, testing, and turnover before opening day.
A lease date, equipment delivery, or grand-opening announcement does not guarantee utility, permit, or inspection readiness. Verify electrical requirements early and assign every dependency.
Define every opening-day electrical load
- List lighting, signs, point-of-sale systems, IT, security, access control, displays, refrigeration, food equipment, HVAC, water heating, stock-room equipment, and cleaning equipment
- Collect voltage, phase, amperage, circuit, location, and manufacturer requirements for every significant device
- Identify loads that operate simultaneously and equipment that needs dedicated circuits or controlled shutdown
- Include future displays, seasonal equipment, exterior features, pickup operations, and planned expansion
Verify the space and project scope
- Confirm service voltage, phase, available capacity, panel condition, breaker spaces, feeder limits, and the route to each proposed load
- Review landlord and tenant responsibility for panels, meters, transformers, signs, utility work, shutdowns, permits, and restoration
- Coordinate electrical plans with architectural, mechanical, fire-alarm, accessibility, low-voltage, signage, millwork, and equipment drawings
- Price ceiling access, trenching, fire-rated penetrations, after-hours work, finish repair, and temporary power—not only breakers and wire
Protect customer and employee operations
- Provide practical receptacle locations so counters, displays, and stock areas do not depend on extension cords or overloaded power strips
- Coordinate lighting levels, controls, emergency and egress lighting, exit signs, exterior lighting, and sign circuits before final finishes
- Separate critical POS, network, security, refrigeration, and life-safety support loads where the design requires it
- Plan safe electrical working clearances and keep panels and disconnects out of storage, display, and customer-traffic conflicts
Finish permits, testing, and turnover
- Confirm permits, required drawings, utility coordination, inspections, landlord approvals, and responsible parties early enough to protect opening day
- Test lighting controls, signs, receptacles, equipment circuits, GFCI protection, shutdowns, and normal restart before merchandise and customers arrive
- Deliver accurate panel directories, equipment labels, as-built information, warranties, inspection records, and emergency contacts
- Walk the completed store with management and document unresolved items, operating instructions, and future capacity limits
