New appliance dedicated-circuit checklist
A useful estimate starts with the exact appliance, its electrical rating, the panel, and a realistic wiring route. Collect these details before delivery day.
Never increase a breaker size, alter a plug, or use an adapter to bypass the equipment’s electrical requirements.
Record the exact equipment
- Photograph the manufacturer nameplate, model number, plug, and installation instructions
- Record the voltage, rated current or wattage, and specified circuit or disconnect requirements
- Confirm whether the appliance is built in, hardwired, cord connected, indoors, outdoors, or in a wet location
- List related equipment that may operate at the same time, including HVAC, cooking, laundry, pool, or shop loads
- Confirm the delivery date and what the appliance installer expects to find ready
Document the electrical path
- Photograph the panel label, breakers, directory, and surrounding area without removing its cover
- Measure the approximate distance from the panel to the proposed appliance location
- Identify accessible attic, crawlspace, garage, ceiling, cabinet, or exterior routing options
- Note finished surfaces, masonry, fire-rated walls, occupied rooms, or areas that must remain operational
- List other planned loads so capacity and future work can be considered together
Flag existing warning signs
- Document breakers that trip, lights that dim, warm outlets, buzzing, discoloration, or burning odor
- Note extension cords, adapters, damaged receptacles, loose plugs, or previous improvised wiring
- Tell the electrician about known aluminum wiring, ungrounded outlets, older panels, or prior repairs
- Stop using equipment that causes smoke, arcing, heat damage, shock, or a persistent burning smell
- Do not install a larger breaker or alter a plug to make the appliance operate
