Medical and dental office electrical continuity checklist
Clinical equipment, sterilization, refrigeration, communications, and patient schedules can all depend on reliable power. Use this checklist to map critical loads and coordinate electrical work before an outage disrupts care.
This planning guide does not replace equipment-manufacturer instructions, healthcare regulations, emergency procedures, engineering, or the facility's electrical safety program. Patient safety and clinical protocols always control the response.
Map clinical and business-critical loads
- List treatment equipment, sterilization, imaging, compressors, vacuum systems, refrigeration, laboratory equipment, IT, phones, security, access control, and medication storage
- Record voltage, phase, circuit, disconnect, startup requirements, manufacturer power limits, and approved shutdown procedure for each critical device
- Identify which loads must remain powered, which can tolerate an interruption, and which require controlled restart or vendor support
- Separate patient-safety, regulatory, data, comfort, and revenue impacts so priorities remain clear during an outage
Verify capacity and installation records
- Keep current one-lines, panel directories, equipment manuals, permits, inspection records, service contacts, and prior electrical findings
- Evaluate electrical capacity before ordering new imaging, sterilization, HVAC, laboratory, or dental equipment
- Confirm dedicated circuits, grounding, protection, receptacle type, surge requirements, and power-quality limits from actual manufacturer documentation
- Document generators, transfer equipment, UPS systems, fuel, runtime assumptions, testing responsibilities, and loads that are not backed up
Plan maintenance without disrupting care
- Define who can authorize a shutdown and who coordinates patients, clinicians, IT, security, landlords, vendors, and other tenants
- Schedule work around sterilization cycles, temperature-sensitive inventory, data backups, imaging calibration, and equipment restart procedures
- Use qualified personnel and the facility's electrical safety and lockout/tagout procedures for electrical work
- Prepare temporary operating plans without using improvised extension cords, unlisted adapters, or unapproved portable power sources
Respond and recover methodically
- During an outage, record the exact time, affected areas, alarms, equipment state, utility status, odor, sound, heat, and breaker indications without opening equipment
- Follow manufacturer and clinical procedures for patient equipment, refrigeration, sterilization, imaging, and data systems
- Restore major loads in an approved sequence and verify voltage, alarms, controls, network, security, HVAC, refrigeration, and clinical equipment
- Document the cause, repairs, test results, inspection status, affected inventory or appointments, and unresolved follow-up actions
