Home Office Electrical Planning Checklist

Print this worksheet and bring your notes to your consultation.

A useful office plan starts with your daily routine. Complete this worksheet before an electrical consultation so you can explain what needs power, where it belongs, and what currently gets in your way.

This is a planning worksheet, not a circuit-capacity calculation or a safety inspection. Record information you can see without moving heavy furniture, opening electrical equipment, or testing wiring. Your electrician should evaluate the existing installation.

1. Map the workspace

  • Sketch the desk, printer station, storage, doors, and walking routes.
  • Mark existing outlets and light switches that are visible and accessible.
  • Include the full movement of an adjustable desk.
  • Identify plugs you cannot reach conveniently.
  • Note cords that currently cross a walkway or doorway.
  • Describe any planned furniture changes or a second workstation.

What is most inconvenient today?

Preferred desk and equipment locations

Explain the desired locations first. An electrician can then assess suitable wiring routes, access, and the circuit work needed to support the proposal.

2. List equipment and simultaneous use

  • Computer, monitors, and docking station
  • Printer, scanner, or other office equipment
  • Router, modem, and networking equipment
  • Desk motors, lamps, and chargers
  • Other equipment used in the room
  • Planned additions that could change the setup

Future equipment to discuss

Do not assume that separate wall outlets are on separate circuits. Ask the electrician to identify what else the proposed supply serves and whether new circuit work is appropriate.

3. Record existing concerns

  • Note repeated breaker trips and what was operating at the time.
  • Describe flickering or unexpected equipment shutdowns.
  • Report visible damage, loose receptacles, unusual heat, or odors.
  • Identify extension cords or power strips used in the current setup.
  • Keep available previous repair or inspection records.

Symptoms and when they happen

Recent equipment or layout changes

Stop using affected equipment if warning signs appear and arrange professional evaluation. Do not repeatedly reset a breaker to keep working. For smoke or fire, leave the area and call 911.

The Electrical Safety Foundation International's at-home safety guidance recommends temporary use of extension cords and keeping cords out from under rugs. A permanent workspace deserves a discussion about convenient permanent power.

4. Plan lighting and interruptions

  • Identify areas used for reading, screen work, and video meetings.
  • Note glare, shadows, or uncomfortable lighting after dark.
  • Decide which lights should operate independently.
  • Identify equipment you need time to save or shut down during an outage.
  • Discuss any battery-backup needs with the equipment supplier.
  • Plan work arrangements during the electrical installation itself.

5. Confirm the estimate and handover

  • Agree on outlet locations and quantities.
  • Confirm whether circuit work, lighting, or controls are included.
  • Identify who supplies the selected equipment.
  • Clarify required permit or inspection coordination.
  • Discuss access openings and responsibility for finish repairs.
  • Agree on approval of any work discovered outside the original scope.
  • Review testing, circuit identification, and equipment operation at completion.
  • Keep the written scope, invoice, and applicable warranty information.
