Home addition electrical planning checklist
Plan the power, lighting, equipment, routes, and future needs before framing and finishes make changes expensive.
An empty breaker position does not prove the service or panel has capacity for an addition. Have the complete load plan evaluated.
Define how the addition will work
- List each room, entrance, furniture location, counter, cabinet, desk, television, and outdoor area
- Identify lighting, fans, receptacles, networking, security, accessibility, and smart-home preferences
- Record exact HVAC, water-heating, cooking, laundry, pool, workshop, and other equipment
- Plan for future appliances, EV charging, backup power, outdoor living, or a change in room use
- Confirm which fixtures and equipment are owner supplied and which are included by contractors
Document the existing electrical system
- Photograph the service, panel label, breaker directory, and surrounding access without removing covers
- Record known breaker trips, dimming, warm devices, burning odor, old wiring, or previous additions
- Identify likely attic, crawlspace, garage, exterior, masonry, and finished-space wiring routes
- Ask for a capacity evaluation rather than assuming open breaker spaces mean power is available
- Coordinate exact equipment ratings before the electrical design is finalized
Coordinate construction and turnover
- Assign responsibility for plans, permits, inspections, fixtures, equipment connections, and utility work
- Schedule electrical rough-in before insulation and drywall conceal framing and wiring
- Plan shutdowns around refrigeration, remote work, medical equipment, security, and occupied rooms
- Photograph concealed wiring and keep permits, inspection records, panel schedules, and warranties
- Review final switches, receptacles, labels, lighting controls, and equipment operation before closeout
