Dock and boat-lift electrical safety checklist

Electricity near water demands dependable protection and careful maintenance. Use this checklist to document waterfront equipment, spot visible damage, prepare for storms, and know when the dock must remain closed.

Shock or tingling in the water can indicate a life-threatening electrical condition. Keep everyone out, call 911 for a person in distress, and have the system evaluated before use.

Recognize conditions that need immediate action

  • Keep everyone out of the water after a shock, tingling sensation, electrical fault, damaged shore-power connection, submerged equipment, or suspected energized metal
  • Call 911 for a person in distress or active fire; do not enter the water to attempt a rescue when electricity may be present
  • Have damaged utility conductors, service equipment, panels, pedestals, and wiring evaluated before the dock is reopened
  • Do not repeatedly reset a breaker or GFCI that trips, bypass protection, or use an extension cord as permanent dock wiring

Document the electrical system

  • Identify the panel, feeder, disconnects, circuits, receptacles, shore-power equipment, boat lift, lighting, pumps, chargers, and controls serving the dock
  • Keep equipment model information, permits, inspection records, repair history, and manufacturer instructions available
  • Label disconnects and circuits clearly and keep required electrical working space accessible
  • Record which equipment operates together and whether recent additions changed the electrical load

Check visible condition without opening equipment

  • Look for cracked covers, missing gaskets, corrosion, loose boxes, damaged cords, exposed wiring, open fittings, heat marks, insect nests, and water intrusion
  • Confirm covers close correctly with cords connected and that cables are protected from boats, lifts, foot traffic, sunlight, and moving equipment
  • Note unusual buzzing, flicker, slow lift operation, repeated trips, intermittent lighting, or equipment that behaves differently after rain or a storm
  • Photograph visible concerns from a dry location; do not open panels, pedestals, disconnects, or underwater equipment

Plan qualified inspection and storm recovery

  • Ask a licensed electrician familiar with waterfront installations to evaluate GFCI protection, grounding, bonding, equipment suitability, wiring methods, and corrosion
  • Test protective devices only as directed by the manufacturer and have failures investigated before equipment is used
  • After flooding, surge, lightning, impact, or major storm exposure, keep affected equipment off until it is assessed
  • Coordinate electrical repairs with marine, structural, utility, and permitting professionals when the dock or lift has also been damaged
