Commercial refrigeration electrical readiness checklist
Map critical equipment, power, alarms, and response responsibilities before an electrical failure threatens inventory or operations.
Smoke, arcing, burning odor, heat damage, or water around energized equipment requires immediate caution. Call 911 for fire.
Map every critical refrigeration load
- List each walk-in, freezer, cooler, display case, ice machine, rack, condenser, and control system
- Record model, voltage, phase, rated load, circuit, panel, breaker, disconnect, and physical location
- Label equipment and electrical directories consistently so staff can identify them during an outage
- Document shared circuits, startup sequencing, control power, alarms, network connections, and monitoring services
- Identify products, processes, or clinical operations affected by each piece of equipment
Build the outage response
- Set temperature thresholds, notification recipients, escalation times, and authority to request emergency service
- Keep refrigeration contractor, electrician, utility, generator provider, landlord, and management contacts current
- Define temporary storage, product-transfer, door-control, and operational procedures
- Confirm which loads are generator backed and test transfer, startup sequence, alarms, fuel, and runtime planning
- Train staff not to repeatedly reset breakers, bypass protection, or enter energized equipment
Inspect and maintain electrical support
- Look for damaged covers, loose devices, corrosion, moisture, blocked panels, exposed wiring, heat, odor, or unusual sound
- Protect conduits, cords, disconnects, and controls from carts, forklifts, wash-downs, roof leaks, and condensation
- Track breaker trips, voltage complaints, repairs, downtime, photographs, readings, and repeat failures
- Coordinate qualified electrical testing with refrigeration maintenance under representative operating load
- Review capacity and circuit requirements before adding or replacing refrigeration equipment
