Commercial parking lot lighting maintenance checklist
Map exterior lighting, document failures, prioritize public areas, and prepare a safer, more efficient service visit.
Keep people away from leaning or struck poles, open handholes, exposed conductors, arcing, smoke, or electrical equipment in standing water. Contact emergency services or the utility when the condition involves immediate danger or utility equipment.
Map fixtures, controls, and priorities
- Create a site map for pole lights, wall packs, canopy lights, signs, pedestrian paths, loading areas, entrances, and emergency routes
- Number poles and fixtures so service requests identify an exact location
- Record photocells, time clocks, contactors, relays, dimming controls, and building-automation schedules
- Mark high-priority areas such as accessible parking, stairs, ramps, walkways, entrances, loading zones, and security-camera views
- Save fixture, lamp, driver, pole, breaker, and control information when available
Inspect after dark and after severe weather
- Walk the property from normal public areas and record dark fixtures, cycling, flicker, inconsistent color, glare, or controls operating at the wrong time
- Look from a safe distance for leaning poles, open handholes, damaged bases, missing covers, exposed conductors, corrosion, water intrusion, or vehicle impact
- Compare recurring failures with rain, irrigation, storms, construction, landscaping, or utility events
- Photograph conditions without opening equipment or entering traffic lanes unsafely
- Restrict access around damaged poles, exposed wiring, arcing, smoke, or energized equipment affected by water
Coordinate repair and verify performance
- Provide lift access, traffic control, keys, alarm instructions, and an authorized site contact
- Agree on repair versus fixture replacement, compatible color and output, control changes, and responsibility for pole or pavement work
- Document the diagnosed cause instead of recording only that a lamp or driver was changed
- Test the repaired fixture, control schedule, photocell response, and neighboring equipment after dark when practical
- Update the site map, parts record, repair date, photographs, and recommended follow-up
