Organize critical loads, transfer equipment, generator placement, fuel, UPS coordination, testing, and outage responsibilities before design begins.

Define critical operations and loads
- List the business functions that must continue during a utility outage and the maximum acceptable interruption for each one
- Record voltage, phase, rated current, starting characteristics, and operating schedule for every proposed critical load
- Separate essential equipment from convenience loads that can remain off or be added later in stages
- Identify loads that must run simultaneously and equipment that needs a controlled shutdown or restart sequence
- Include expected growth, tenant changes, new equipment, refrigeration, pumps, IT, access control, security, and selected HVAC
Coordinate the electrical and site design
- Gather one-line diagrams, panel schedules, service information, utility bills, equipment nameplates, and existing generator records
- Define automatic or manual transfer, selected-circuit or larger-system coverage, load management, and return-to-utility operation
- Coordinate UPS runtime and compatibility for servers, communications, controls, payment systems, and other interruption-sensitive equipment
- Document fuel type, expected runtime, refueling contacts, storage constraints, manufacturer clearances, exhaust, drainage, and flood exposure
- Plan maintenance access, security, noise, vehicle protection, landscaping, landlord requirements, permits, inspections, and shutdown windows
Build the outage response and testing plan
- Assign the people who receive alarms, confirm operation, shed loads, contact vendors, and decide whether the business remains open
- Create safe shutdown and restart instructions for refrigeration, HVAC, pumps, production, elevators, IT, and tenant equipment as applicable
- Label backed-up panels, circuits, transfer equipment, disconnects, controls, and equipment consistently
- Schedule manufacturer-recommended exercising, maintenance, batteries, fuel checks, alarms, transfer tests, and appropriate load testing
- Record every test, deficiency, repair, fuel event, outage, transfer, and post-event review for the facility team
