Ceiling fan installation readiness checklist

Gather the support, wiring, control, ceiling, and fan details that help prevent surprises on installation day.

Stop using a fan that is strongly wobbling, visibly loose, scraping, overheating, or producing a burning odor.

Document the existing location

Photograph the ceiling location, canopy or light fixture, wall switches, and nearby room layout
Measure the ceiling height and note slopes, beams, doors, cabinets, bunk beds, and other clearance concerns
Record whether a fan, light fixture, or no electrical equipment is currently installed
Note attic access, finished ceilings, visible water stains, loose boxes, or prior ceiling repairs
Report flicker, buzzing, heat, odor, wobble, breaker trips, or intermittent operation

Save the fan model, weight, blade span, mounting instructions, downrod, and included control information
Confirm the manufacturer rates the fan for indoor, damp, or wet exposure at the planned location
Decide whether the fan and light need separate wall controls, a remote, or smart-home features
Identify tall, sloped, exterior, or unusually heavy installations before the appointment
Keep compatible accessories, batteries, receivers, and manufacturer-specific mounting parts together

Clear furniture and fragile items from the work area while preserving safe ladder access
Do not assume a light-fixture box is approved or adequately supported for a rotating fan
Discuss any requested new wiring, new fan location, added switches, or ceiling repairs in advance
Plan for pets, children, alarms, gates, parking, and access to the electrical panel
After installation, verify stable operation, every speed, lighting, controls, direction, and remote functions
