Bathroom exhaust fan installation checklist
Coordinate the fan, controls, electrical supply, duct path, building access, and testing before ceiling work begins.
Stop using a fan or control that smells burned, sparks, becomes hot, buzzes electrically, trips a breaker, or has water entering the housing. Do not open the unit or electrical panel to investigate energized parts.
Choose the fan and controls
- Measure the bathroom and note the shower, tub, enclosed toilet area, ceiling height, and moisture problems
- Choose a fan based on required airflow, installed performance, sound rating, energy use, and manufacturer guidance
- Decide whether the fan includes a light, night-light, heater, multiple speeds, humidity sensor, occupancy sensor, or timer
- Confirm whether each function needs separate switching, constant power, neutral conductors, or a compatible wall control
- Save the exact model, installation manual, grille dimensions, housing size, duct size, and warranty before work begins
Plan electrical, duct, and building access
- Photograph the existing fan, switches, closed electrical panel, attic access, and exterior area without opening electrical equipment
- Record whether the current fan is dead, noisy, intermittent, slow to start, always running, or linked incorrectly with the light
- Identify a practical duct route that terminates outdoors rather than into an attic, soffit cavity, crawl area, or other enclosed space
- Check attic access, insulation, framing, roof or wall termination needs, ceiling finish, and any suspected asbestos or lead-paint constraints
- Coordinate the electrician, ventilation or roofing work, drywall repair, painting, permits, and inspection responsibility as applicable
Verify operation and keep records
- Confirm the fan, light, heater, sensors, timer, and every switch operate as intended after installation
- Verify the exterior damper opens, the duct is connected and supported, and exhausted air reaches the outdoor termination
- Listen for vibration, rubbing, rattling, or unusually loud airflow that may indicate a housing, grille, damper, or duct problem
- Ask how to clean the grille, maintain the fan, adjust sensors or timers, and recognize a problem that needs service
- Keep the model, installation date, contractor information, permit or inspection records, settings, and warranty with the home records
