Aluminum wiring evaluation and repair checklist
Organize the history, symptoms, access, repair questions, and closeout records needed for a useful aluminum branch-circuit wiring evaluation.
Stop using a device or circuit that is hot, discolored, smoking, arcing, or producing a burning-plastic odor. Do not open the wiring yourself. Leave the building and call 911 if there is smoke, fire, or immediate danger.
Collect the home's history without opening equipment
- Write down the home's construction date and the dates of additions, remodels, panel work, or major appliance changes
- Gather inspection reports, permits, repair invoices, insurance requests, and any previous aluminum-wiring documentation
- List rooms with warm devices, flickering lights, unexplained odors, discoloration, intermittent power, or switches and receptacles that do not work
- Photograph visible device covers, the closed electrical panel, and accessible cable markings only from safe finished or unfinished areas
- Do not remove receptacles, switches, panel covers, wire connectors, or insulation to identify the conductor yourself
Prepare for a qualified whole-system evaluation
- Provide access to the electrical panel, attic or crawl-space entrances, garage, and every room where branch-circuit devices may need evaluation
- Point out high-use circuits and equipment such as kitchen appliances, portable heaters, window air conditioners, laundry equipment, and workshop tools
- Ask the electrician to distinguish solid aluminum branch-circuit wiring from larger aluminum conductors used for services, feeders, ranges, or dryers
- Request a written scope that identifies the connections to be addressed, the proposed repair method, inaccessible locations, and any damaged devices or boxes
- Confirm who will coordinate permits, inspections, access, drywall or paint repair, and any work involving other trades
Document the repair and future changes
- Keep the electrician's findings, repair method, product information, photographs, permit, inspection result, invoice, and warranty together
- Ask how added devices, remodels, troubleshooting, and future equipment work should be handled so later changes do not compromise repaired connections
- Provide the requested closeout documents to the insurer, buyer, lender, or inspector instead of assuming one repair format satisfies every organization
- Record any locations that could not be accessed and schedule the agreed follow-up rather than treating an incomplete evaluation as whole-home completion
- Continue to report heat, odor, flicker, discoloration, or intermittent operation promptly even after repair; those symptoms can have more than one cause
