Older homes give Jacksonville its character, but the electrical system behind the walls may have been designed for a very different household. Central air conditioning, modern kitchens, home offices, EV charging, and entertainment equipment can expose limitations that were easy to miss years ago. Rewiring is not automatically the answer to every electrical problem. The right first step is a documented evaluation that separates isolated repairs from broader system concerns.
What whole-home rewiring actually means
Rewiring generally means replacing some or all branch-circuit conductors that carry power from the electrical panel to outlets, switches, lights, and permanently connected equipment. Depending on the home, the project may also involve new device boxes, grounding corrections, smoke-alarm wiring, dedicated appliance circuits, surge protection, and panel or service work.
A careful scope matters. One damaged cable should not automatically become a whole-home rewire, while repeated problems across many circuits should not be treated as unrelated service calls. Warning signs worth investigating

- The home relies heavily on extension cords or power strips because receptacles are scarce
- Ungrounded receptacles remain in areas serving modern electronics or appliances
- Previous renovations contain exposed splices, crowded boxes, or inconsistent workmanship
- A burning or hot-plastic odor appears near a switch, receptacle, fixture, or panel
- An inspection identifies older wiring that has been damaged, overloaded, or improperly altered
These symptoms can have different causes. A loose service connection, failing device, overloaded circuit, damaged cable, or utility issue can imitate a larger wiring problem. Diagnosis comes before demolition.
Jacksonville homes are not all built the same
Age is useful context, but it is not a diagnosis. A well-maintained older home may have undergone permitted electrical improvements, while a newer property may contain poor additions or storm-related damage. Northeast Florida also adds heat, humidity, salt exposure near the coast, heavy air-conditioning demand, lightning, and hurricane-season water risks.
The evaluation should consider the visible panel and service condition, grounding and bonding, circuit protection, receptacle grounding, GFCI and AFCI protection where applicable, attic or crawl-space access, prior additions, and planned loads. The electrician may recommend testing or opening selected devices to understand what is actually installed. Homeowners should never remove a panel cover or disturb suspect wiring themselves.
Partial rewire or whole-home rewire?
A partial rewire can make sense when the concern is limited to a remodel area, damaged circuit, detached structure, ungrounded section, or equipment upgrade. A broader rewire may be more practical when obsolete or compromised wiring is widespread, many rooms lack needed circuits, renovations have created inconsistent systems, or accessing the same finished areas repeatedly would cost more over time.
The proposal should define which circuits and rooms are included, what remains, how walls and ceilings will be accessed, who handles patching, which devices and protection are included, and how hidden conditions will be priced. Clear boundaries prevent a low initial number from turning into a confusing project.
What affects the project plan
- Home size, number of stories, and circuit count
- Attic, crawl-space, masonry, and finished-wall access
- Whether occupants remain in the home during construction
- Panel capacity and the result of the electrical load calculation
- Kitchen, laundry, HVAC, water-heating, workshop, pool, generator, or EV loads
- Permit, inspection, and utility-coordination requirements
- Device quality, lighting changes, data wiring, and future expansion
- Required drywall, paint, cabinet, or exterior restoration
An accurate estimate usually requires an on-site visit. Square-foot shortcuts do not reveal access, circuit condition, or the difference between a targeted correction and a complete replacement.
How to prepare for an electrical evaluation
Make a list of recurring symptoms, rooms with too few outlets, planned appliances, renovation goals, and any equipment you expect to add in the next several years. Gather prior inspection reports and permits if available. Do not move wiring or remove equipment covers for photographs; exterior photos and clear access are enough.
Ask the electrician to explain which findings are immediate safety priorities, which are reliability improvements, and which are optional modernization. A useful proposal should describe the intended outcome, permitting, inspection, outage expectations, cleanup, and warranty.
When the situation is urgent
Active sparking, smoke, fire, strong burning odor, a hot panel, or damaged service conductors should not wait for a routine estimate. Leave the affected area, avoid touching equipment, and contact emergency services or the utility when appropriate. For recurring trips, broad flickering, warm devices, or suspected wiring problems, schedule a licensed electrical evaluation before the condition becomes an outage or fire risk.
